Buying a used car is one of those decisions that feels simple on the surface, until you start wondering what you might be missing. Is it a good price? Has it been looked after? Will it turn into a headache three months down the line?
The good news is that most problems can be avoided if you know what to check before you buy. You don’t need to be a mechanic, but you do need to slow down and look beyond the paintwork.
Here’s what actually matters.
Start with the paperwork
Before you even think about test drives, make sure the basics are in place. The V5C logbook should be present and match the car’s details. The registration number, VIN and engine number should all line up. If something doesn’t, that’s your cue to pause.
Service history is just as important. A fully stamped book isn’t always essential, but evidence of regular maintenance tells you how the car’s been treated. Long gaps with no explanation are worth questioning.
Check the MOT history
In the UK, MOT history is publicly available and it’s one of the most useful tools buyers have. Look for repeated advisories on the same issues, especially tyres, brakes or suspension. One-off comments are normal. Patterns are not.
If a seller can’t explain recurring advisories or repairs, that’s a red flag.
Look past the shine
It’s easy to be distracted by clean alloys and fresh polish, but take a moment to look closely. Check panel gaps, paint consistency and signs of repairs. Uneven spacing or mismatched paint can indicate previous damage.
Inside the car, wear should make sense for the mileage. Excessive wear on the steering wheel, pedals or seats doesn’t always mean a problem, but it should add up logically.
Cold starts matter
If possible, view the car when the engine is cold. A warm engine can hide starting issues. Listen for rattles, knocking or warning lights that linger longer than they should.
Once driving, the car should feel smooth, responsive and predictable. Any pulling, vibration or unusual noises are worth investigating before money changes hands.
Don’t rush the decision
A used car purchase shouldn’t feel pressured. If something doesn’t feel right, walk away. There will always be another car.
Reputable dealers expect questions and are happy to explain a vehicle’s history, condition and preparation. If you feel rushed or dismissed, trust your instincts.
